The traditional method of draping a saree is the most common and earliest method. It is commonly referred to as the Nivi design and originated in Andhra Pradesh. The saree is wrapped around the waist and draped over the left shoulder in this design. The opposite end of the saree is wrapped around the waist and hidden behind.
Following are the methods for draping a saree in the traditional manner:
- Begin by tucking the ordinary end (non-pallu end) of the saree on the right side of the waist and bringing it around the waist to the back.
- Bring the saree to the front and create left-side pleats. Just below the belly button, tuck these pleats into the waistband.
- Bring the pallu (the decorative end of the saree) over your left shoulder so that it drapes behind you.
- Place the remaining pallu fabric under your right arm and over your left shoulder. Attach the pallu to the top.
- Adjust the saree’s pleats as needed and ensure that the fabric is draped evenly.
The traditional method of draping a saree is appropriate for formal and informal occasions alike. It is effortless to wear, comfortable, and stylish.
